Toy Codes and Categories
All toys are categorised by the type of play and skills they encourage. Below is a brief outline of the main categories.
A is for Activity
Toys that develop gross motor skills.
Bb is for Early Years
Toys specifically for babies and toddlers from birth to 24 months.
C is for Coordination
These toys develop fine motor skills and hand-to-eye coordination.
- Ca: threading, lacing, screwing, turning, hammering, stacking and posting toys
- Cb: construction sets with linking parts or magnets
- Cc: Blocks that have non-linking parts
D is for Discrimination
Toys that stimulate sensory skills such as distinctions about colour, shape and size.
- Da: Visual (matching, sorting, grading and shape play)
- Db: Auditory (instruments and musical appreciation)
- Dp: Jigsaw puzzles
E is for Expression
Toys designed to encourage imaginative play and role-playing.
- Ea: creative activities such as domestic role play, sand & water play, animal figures, puppets
- Eb: Fantasy play through dress-ups
- Ec: Model play sets such as trains, rockets, emergency sets, farms etc
Ed is for Electronic and STEM
Electronic interactive learning toys, mini-computers, coding robots, science toys, nature sets.
G is for Games
Indoor games, including games that the whole family can play together.
